Audience Research

Appealing conventions
Whilst doing our audience research we decided to ask about appealing narratives to see what appeals to people the most when deciding to watch a film. We thought this would be helpful as it allowed us to gain an insight into possible advertising strategies such as what to focus on when creating posters as well as what to emphasise within our opening if it was going to be real film. The research tells us that graphics was the least popular factor when encouraging people to watch a film; therefore graphics will not be a dominant part of our opening. The chart shows the stars gained half the vote for appealing conventions so we have decided to make sure the stars we select will portray the narrative in the best way possible and be relatable to the audience as the stars are what the audience will connect with the most when watching our opening.

We thought finding out the popular ways in which our audience consume media was important, not only for realistic advertising in media industry but also for the “relatable” aspect of our thriller. As T.V and posters were the most occurring ways of media consumption we will consider incorporating some elements of media within our opening, creating a direct link to the audience and “on screen action”, adding realism.

When considering production for our thriller we wanted to ensure we was using the most popular production company in order to appeal to our audience and gain a wide audience. We discovered that mainstream was the most popular production company when selecting a film for our audience due to its popularity (highlighted in the reasons for desired prod. chart) as mainstream appeals to a mass audience such as companies like “Universal”,  unlike independent film labels that appeal to a niche audience, for example “Coffee Films” appeals to an Indie audience. Therefore, we have decided to create a mainstream film in order to increase our audience.
Genre was the most important aspect to consider when making our thriller. Even though our main genre is Thriller we considered the possibility of creating a hybrid film, due to other popular genres. While completing our research we discovered there was a possibility of adding romance somewhere within our narrative as it was one of the most popular genres along with action, which we have decided to incorporate elements of within our opening. Horror was the least popular, meaning we will not be using it within the opening, however comedy was the third popular so despite our serious narrative we will ensure there is a slot left for an element of comedy that we will decide.

Thriller Treatment

THRILLER TREATMENT
'DISSIMULATE'

Hannah, Tabby, India and Danni are four girls that have been ridiculed, since year 7. Girls that have been left out, of any social event made to feel inadequate. The social outcasts devise a plan to change the history and the lives of the students at St Mary’s College forever, when an irrational suggestion from Hannah after she learns about the shootings in Columbine, America in an RS lesson that day, l
eaves the four girls buzzing at the prospect of power, which helps the girls to devise a cunning plan, which no one would ever suspect. As the dangerous plan unfolds the pressure begins to mount, as the girls begin to realize just how sadistic their plan is. The strain causes the group to divide; Hannah and Tabby find themselves turning on the others, as they realize that India and Danni are not up to the job, causing the plan to take a dramatic twist.

Thriller Research- "The Birds"

My Thriller Opening Research- "Memento"

There is a continuous use of extreme close ups forcing the audience to almost be overwhelmed with the actor’s emotion and almost “step inside his shoes”. For example, the film begins with a close up (which almost appears to be and over the shoulder shot) of a man shaking a Polaroid (Guy Pearce), causing it to gradually fade away. We are immediately seeing things from the man’s point of view, the fading picture creating a sense of enigma as it may represent going back in time. The Polaroid is also a subtle hint at the plot. Due to the “point of view” effect of the close up over the shoulder shot our group considered replicating the shot in when creating our opening as we want to ensure the audience are made to feel as part of the action as possible, in order to make sure our thriller opening attains their attention. Within the film there is non diagetic orchestral sound. The music is quite sad/draining, with the audience being drained also due to be confronted with raw emotion in close ups.
Sound is a key part of film openings. Therefore we plan to use a soundtrack within our opening to create a tense atmosphere and create a sense of being cut off from reality. Music also helps to heighten emotion as the instruments can create a mood fitting the action on screen. This is something we hope to achieve when selecting music for our opening.
Memento contains several close using slow pace editing to provide us with a sense of place as well as shock and slightly scare the audience as we are initially shown a close up of blood dripping down the wall, connoting death. We then see a bullet, shot in the same way and intriguing the audience as we do not know what has happened. There are several short shots of objects around the room, shot in the same way. As a group we have considered the possibility of slow pace editing to build suspense and create a tense atmosphere. Close ups allow the audience to see details of selected mise-en-scene, which we will select as a group to add to the realism of our desired shot when constructing our opening.
A voice-over, is used to introduce a source of reality, breaking the diageses of the film. As the man are about to drive away the camera cuts to a wide shot of the area, providing a sense of place. Using a voice over within our opening will allow us to add a sense of reality as well as almost introduce a possible character to our thriller. It may also be used to suggests someone is looking back on events or almost narrating the action on screen. This will allow our group to portray transitions in time.
Whilst the two men are in the car, a shot reverse shot is used throughout their conversation to create a sense of “back and forth”. At the same time, the shot pleases the audience as it is something they “expect to see” as it is an aspect of “everyday life” that always appears in T.V Dramas and films. Therefore to maintain a sense of reality within the action we will include conversation shots, satisfying the audience’s expectations.
